Formation créée en 1969 par  Carlos Devadip Santana , musicien à l'incroyable
jeu de guitare électrique qui se caractérise par un son chaud, gorgé de soleil immédiatement identifiable, un mélange de rock, jazz, psychédélisme, salsa,
blues, rythmes afro-cubains, Cette formule comprenant guitare, basse, batterie, claviers, chant en Espagnol & Anglais, et percussions très présentes...
inédite pour l'époque, connut rapidement un succès considérable et fut en
quelque sorte à l'origine de la world music. De nombreuses personnalités se succèderont au sein de la formation. La discographie du groupe est considérable, avec comme point d'orgue le second album " Abraxas " paru en 1970.
