Apparentée autant au rock progressif expérimental de l'école Canterbury
qu'aux musiques nouvelles et avant-gardistes,  Henry Cow  
est la formation-phare du courant rock in opposition.
Au départ, c'est la rencontre entre  Fred Frith  et  Tim Hodgkinson ,
qui se trouvent un intérêt commun pour les compositions complexes
et intellectuelles, John Greaves  à la basse et  Chris Cutler  à la batterie
complète le noyau dur de la formation. Si au départ la musique
d' Henry Cow  pouvait se comparer au style Canterbury,
le groupe va très vite se forger un style à part en improvisant
comme peut-être aucun groupe n'avait osé le faire.
