La carrière des Doobie Brothers peut être divisée en deux périodes.
La formation californienne, très populaire durant les années 1970,
a commencé comme groupe de fête, comme le laisse supposer leur nom.
Ils ont enregistré une série de hits plutôt rock, comme "Jesus Is Just
Alright", "Take Me in Your Arms" et "Black Water". L'intro de guitare
de "China Grove" est devenue un classique du rock, jouée dans
pratiquement tous les bars du monde. Ces succès de début de carrière
avaient quelque chose de contagieux, avec des mélodies solides,
de superbes harmonies et un rythme hors norme qui faisaient leur originalité.
Ce côté joyeux et exubérant de leur rock est ensuite pratiquement
abandonné avec l'arrivée de Michael McDonald qui apporte une touche
funk au groupe, "It Keeps You Runnin'" et "Takin' It To The Streets"
étant de bons exemples. "Best Of The Doobies" est davantage
consacré aux hits antérieurs à son arrivée.
